WFX Conference with Rex Miller

I went to the WFX Conference in Indy yesterday. It is a huge conference about church design, building, outfitting, media, etc. I was able to hear author Rex Miller give the key note address. His lecture really interested me. He calls himself a Futurist, whatever that means, but he believes that we are entering a new age of communication and is encouraging the church to get on board or it is in danger of becoming irrelevant. He believes we have come through four major stages in how we communicate: oral, print, broadcast, and now digital. He says that most churches communicate through a broadcast mentality. Which simply means we tell people what we want to them to hear, we try to put on a polished performance, and we communicate in a way where we tell and the person listens. Now I just was introduced to his concept yesterday, but I ordered his book the Millennium Matrix to find our more about it. I might not be getting this 100% correct, but I believe that Miller is definitely on to something.

I have felt for a while that students are very different today, they think different, they do different stuff. I was raised on TV and am still in the broadcast category, these students are digital and function differently. This may explain a lot, in fact this may help me in a major way to become more effective. I am really stoked about getting the book and will let you know what I find out. The last thing I want to tell you is, that Miller offered to dialogue with anyone that wanted to talk at the end of the conference. The guys I was with and I were the only ones that showed up. So we had 1 hour of personal one on one time with him. We were able to talk about his concepts more in depth, especially in regards to youth. It was amazing, I loved talking to him and it probably would have cost a fortune for an hour of his time anywhere else, but I think he did it because he really cares about the state of the church, no one made him do it. Anyway, I will tell you more after I dive into the book.
